Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Mason McCormick, the No. 152 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 215. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
Everything downstream of Drake Maye depends on Drake Maye, and the building knows it. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
On the needs board they went 3 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
Troy Franklin in pick No. 34 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Blake Fisher in the 68th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow Javon Baker was still sitting there in the Round 4 slot, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Cam Hart at the 137th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor itch, scratched.
Tahj Washington in pick 180 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 211, where Ryan Flournoy graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taking Mason McCormick in slot 215 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Edefuan Ulofoshio in No. 231 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
