The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
They are betting Wallace proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
In No. 29 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They talked themselves into Kingsley Suamataia at Round 2, Pick 2, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
Max Melton in pick No. 73 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cole Bishop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Luke McCaffrey at slot 137 is a conviction pick that outran the value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Caedan Wallace at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Kendall Milton at the 193rd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Brevyn Spann-Ford in the 231st overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
