The Patriots went off the board in a big way for Tyler Batty, 83 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Gordon II. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Barton pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Luther Burden III and all.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.20 · Pick 20 · Luther Burden III · WR · rank 19
In the 20th overall pick they get a true top target at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Malaki Starks · S · rank 17
Somehow Malaki Starks was still sitting there in Round 2, Pick 5, and they pounced on premier safety value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Donovan Jackson · OT · rank 85
Donovan Jackson at pick No. 38 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.25 · Pick 89 · Deontae Lawson · LB · rank 81
A slide stopped in the 89th pick, with Deontae Lawson worth more than the price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.4 · Pick 105 · Lander Barton · LB · rank 127
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Lander Barton adds a linebacker and leaves quarterback untouched.
R5.6 · Pick 143 · Sebastian Castro · S · rank 87
You do not let a safety like Sebastian Castro reach the Round 5 slot and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.23 · Pick 160 · Mason Taylor · TE · rank 98
They robbed the room for Mason Taylor here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.29 · Pick 166 · Nazir Stackhouse · DL · rank 184
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Nazir Stackhouse. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.30 · Pick 167 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 206
They left a pile of value on the table to take Seth McLaughlin this early at the 167th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R6.33 · Pick 208 · Jared Wilson · C · rank 210
Jared Wilson in slot 208 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Davison Igbinosun · CB · rank 219
Davison Igbinosun in Round 7, Pick 1 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Tyler Batty · DE-EDGE · rank 303
Tyler Batty at pick No. 220 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.25 · Pick 241 · Ollie Gordon II · RB · rank 163
Steal is underselling it; Ollie Gordon II at No. 241 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
