The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Kaleb Johnson slide 92 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Little to argue with here, and the A- says so.
They will need Dumervil to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Kaleb McGary leading the way.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Tetairoa McMillan and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 10 they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Emeka Egbuka in Round 2, Pick 10 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 72 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jabbar Muhammad at pick 86 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They will replay Tyler Warren at the 95th pick for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board fumbled Smael Mondon Jr. all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Steal is underselling it; Kaleb Johnson at slot 144 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Aubrey Burks at the 236th overall pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let a linebacker like Nick Martin reach pick No. 247 and blink. They did not. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A wild overpay on Marcus Dumervil in pick 256, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
