You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Ben Sinnott at No. 104, roughly 41 spots before his name belonged. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
Mahogany falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Darius Slayton deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 34 with a little surplus value in Troy Fautanu. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They took Ja'Lynn Polk at par in Round 2, Pick 19, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Javon Bullard a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Junior Colson. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid up for Khyree Jackson at No. 97 when waiting would have done the job. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Christian Mahogany at slot 100 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Ben Sinnott well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
Darius Robinson in the 106th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Dylan Laube at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached a country mile for Jaylen Wright at the 136th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
