The rest of the league had time to spare on Spencer Rattler; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 49 spots ahead at slot 68.
Dixon falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Amarius Mims in pick 34. It fills a real need, too.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Spencer Rattler well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Theo Johnson at the 103rd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Sataoa Laumea at the 137th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
You do not let a safety like Sione Vaki reach pick No. 180 and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kamal Hadden in the 193rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They barely believed it either: Johnny Dixon still on the board at the 231st overall pick. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
