Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
On value alone, Rosemy-Jacksaint makes the weekend a net positive. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.
Every board in the league had Knox lower, and that gap is the story. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 12 they get their quarterback of the future, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 14th pick they get a blindside protector at fair value.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 34 with a little surplus value in Troy Franklin. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A quiet steal in the 54th overall pick: Keon Coleman for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in No. 68, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Bucky Irving in slot 76 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Xavier Legette at Round 3, Pick 20 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board fumbled Khyree Jackson all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, James Williams at No. 135. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Taking Sataoa Laumea in the 136th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took Dylan Laube at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jared Wiley at pick 182 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Knox in Round 6, Pick 22, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at pick No. 229 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
