Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Mike Sainristil, the No. 56 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 103. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
The cost of the Travis reach is exactly the players who went right after him. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Value with a capital V on Graham Barton in the 34th pick, a genuine coup. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A tidy little value on Kamren Kinchens in Round 3, Pick 4, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Mike Sainristil was still sitting there in pick No. 103, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jordan Travis well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Marist Liufau in slot 180. A minor itch, scratched.
Jase McClellan in the 193rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nathaniel Watson at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
