The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.

Richardson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.

The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 10
In the 11th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.23 · Pick 23 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 27
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 31
Tyler Guyton in slot 34 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Ja'Lynn Polk · WR · rank 66
Ja'Lynn Polk in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Ray Davis · RB · rank 96
Ray Davis at pick 108 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Isaiah Adams · OT · rank 125
Isaiah Adams at No. 137 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Dallin Holker · TE · rank 159
You do not let a tight end like Dallin Holker reach the 177th overall pick and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Josh Newton · CB · rank 153
A cornerback of that caliber at pick No. 180 is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · James Williams · LB · rank 173
Somehow James Williams was still sitting there in pick No. 193, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Julian Pearl · OT · rank 228
No drama and no debate, Julian Pearl went about where he belonged in the 230th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Decamerion Richardson · CB · rank 174
Circle this one: Decamerion Richardson at No. 231 is a fall that decides a draft. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
