New England Patriots

The Patriots let Skattebo fall and pounced. Final grade: B.

Somebody in pick No. 219 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Cam Skattebo, the No. 114 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.

Thornton Jr. has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.

They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.3 · Pick 3 · Travis Hunter · CB · rank 1
In pick No. 3 they get a sticky cover corner. Need was not the driver here.
R1.13 · Pick 13 · Tetairoa McMillan · WR · rank 6
Tetairoa McMillan in the Round 1 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Aireontae Ersery · OT · rank 55
A wild overpay on Aireontae Ersery in pick 34, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Donovan Jackson · OT · rank 85
This one needs a full-page explanation: Donovan Jackson in the 67th overall pick, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Alfred Collins · DT · rank 62
Value with a capital V on Alfred Collins in Round 3, Pick 15, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.29 · Pick 93 · Malachi Moore · S · rank 72
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malachi Moore in the 93rd pick, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.2 · Pick 103 · Danny Stutsman · LB · rank 86
A quiet steal in slot 103: Danny Stutsman for less than the market said. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.4 · Pick 105 · Jake Majors · C · rank 93
A slide stopped in No. 105, with Jake Majors worth more than the price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.1 · Pick 138 · Dont'e Thornton Jr. · WR · rank 171
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick 138 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 114
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at slot 219 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Lander Barton · LB · rank 128
You do not let a linebacker like Lander Barton reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Bryson Nesbit · TE · rank 232
Bryson Nesbit at the 238th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
