You build a draft on nights like this. Quinshon Judkins had no business being available in Round 5, Pick 5, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
The Caldwell reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. It is not that Campbell is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.8
· Pick 8
· James Pearce Jr.
· DE-EDGE
· rank 11
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.2
· Pick 34
· Tre Harris
· WR
· rank 23
Tre Harris slid further than he should have, and No. 34 is lovely value for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.7
· Pick 39
· Jalon Walker
· LB
· rank 25
A quiet steal in slot 39: Jalon Walker for less than the market said. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.14
· Pick 46
· Nick Emmanwori
· S
· rank 17
They robbed the room for Nick Emmanwori here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Jihaad Campbell
· LB
· rank 40
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent pick No. 67 on Jihaad Campbell, a linebacker they were not short of.
R4.2
· Pick 103
· Jack Bech
· WR
· rank 95
They read the board right and Jack Bech was the payoff at pick 103. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.5
· Pick 106
· Luke Kandra
· OG
· rank 109
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Luke Kandra. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.1
· Pick 138
· Oronde Gadsden II
· TE
· rank 133
Good price on Oronde Gadsden II in the 138th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
R5.5
· Pick 142
· Quinshon Judkins
· RB
· rank 73
You do not let a running back like Quinshon Judkins reach pick 142 and blink. They did not. It fills a real need, too.
R7.3
· Pick 219
· Jamaree Caldwell
· DL
· rank 287
Jamaree Caldwell in the 219th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.4
· Pick 220
· Seth McLaughlin
· C
· rank 207
Seth McLaughlin in No. 220 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
