The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They are betting Gargiulo proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The Simpson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd overall pick they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for Jordan Morgan in Round 2, Pick 2, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Circle this one: Xavier Worthy at pick 68 is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jalyx Hunt well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They let Johnny Wilson come to them and pounced at pick No. 137. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jaylin Simpson at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had Sione Vaki higher than No. 193, and the safety fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Nick Gargiulo at slot 231, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
