Call it larceny. Kris Abrams-Draine sat on the board until the Round 4 slot, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
It is not that Abrams-Draine is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Marvin Harrison Jr. in Round 1, Pick 3, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Olumuyiwa Fashanu here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Steal is underselling it; Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at the Round 3 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Circle this one: Xavier Legette at pick No. 102 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Kris Abrams-Draine in the 136th pick leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
The board fumbled Isaiah Adams all the way to No. 179, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
They did well to land Frank Gore Jr. in the 231st overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
