New England Patriots

Kinchens should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a A-.

This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Kamren Kinchens, the No. 73 name on the board, stolen at slot 107.

They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Andrew Billings pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.

The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 9
In the 11th overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 25
The board had Kool-Aid McKinstry higher than Round 2, Pick 2, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 42
Edgerrin Cooper at the 43rd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Kiran Amegadjie · OT · rank 65
Nothing to complain about; Kiran Amegadjie went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Javon Baker · WR · rank 95
A reasonable price with a little left over, Javon Baker in No. 102. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 73
Steal is underselling it; Kamren Kinchens at pick No. 107 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 104
Zak Zinter in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.36 · Pick 136 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 123
They read the board right and McKinnley Jackson was the payoff at pick 136. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.20 · Pick 156 · Jordan Travis · QB · rank 157
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Travis at No. 156 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 165
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 179. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 224
They did well to land Frank Gore Jr. in pick 230, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 200
The board fumbled Jared Wiley all the way to Round 7, Pick 11, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
