The Patriots ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The Byrd reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Justin Fields deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
In slot 23 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A conviction pick on Cade Stover at Round 3, Pick 4 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
Caelen Carson at pick No. 103 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A reach for Mason McCormick in the Round 5 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Jha'Quan Jackson at the 180th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Curtis Jacobs at pick 193 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A tidy little value on Frank Gore Jr. in the 231st pick, a step better than break-even. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached into another round for Solomon Byrd, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
