New England Patriots

The Patriots left with their quarterback, and a A- to match.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Michael Penix Jr. is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They banked enough surplus on McGlothern to cover a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.

The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Kaleb McGary leading the way.

Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.8 · Pick 8 · Michael Penix Jr. · QB · rank 9
In pick No. 8 they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 47
They paid sticker price for Cooper Beebe in slot 43, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.17 · Pick 49 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 55
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Worthy at No. 49, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Jermaine Burton · WR · rank 56
Nice patience on Jermaine Burton, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 4. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Jalen McMillan · WR · rank 99
Jalen McMillan in the 103rd overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.12 · Pick 112 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 106
Braelon Allen at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It fills a real need, too.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 118
Blake Fisher at the 117th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Trevor Keegan · OG · rank 144
Trevor Keegan in pick 137 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.15 · Pick 151 · Walter Rouse · OT · rank 164
A premium they did not need to pay, Walter Rouse a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Cody Schrader · RB · rank 175
They did well to land Cody Schrader in No. 180, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.16 · Pick 191 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 161
Dwight McGlothern in slot 191 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Isaiah Williams · WR · rank 181
The board had Isaiah Williams higher than the Round 6 slot, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Sheridan Jones · CB · rank 220
Sheridan Jones in the 231st pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
