New England Patriots

Nobody dealt better than the Patriots this weekend: A.

Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Patriots came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. This is how you run a draft, and the A reflects it.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. On value alone, Guyton makes the weekend a net positive.

The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Keon Coleman and all.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.2 · Pick 34 · Keon Coleman · WR · rank 24
A quiet steal in the 34th overall pick: Keon Coleman for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Devontez Walker · WR · rank 45
A clean, defensible pick in No. 50 with a little surplus value in Devontez Walker. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.22 · Pick 54 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 40
Tyler Guyton slid further than he should have, and the 54th pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 57
Good price on Chris Braswell in pick No. 62, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Javon Bullard · S · rank 63
They did well to land Javon Bullard in pick 68, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Michael Pratt · QB · rank 104
Michael Pratt at slot 104 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.36 · Pick 136 · MarShawn Lloyd · RB · rank 131
MarShawn Lloyd at the Round 4 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 168
Chau Smith-Wade in Round 6, Pick 7 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R7.9 · Pick 229 · Erick All · TE · rank 230
They paid sticker price for Erick All in the 229th pick, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.17 · Pick 237 · Tanor Bortolini · C · rank 226
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tanor Bortolini in pick No. 237. The roster fit checks out.
