The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Nick Nash, the No. 141 name on the board, sitting there at pick 219 like a gift left on the doorstep. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They will need Kroeger to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get a double-digit-sack hope at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They took Cameron Williams at par in the 38th pick, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Taking Trey Amos in Round 3, Pick 5 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Harold Fannin Jr. in pick 77 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Tez Johnson. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Cam Skattebo still on the board at the 145th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Nick Nash in No. 219, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached a country mile for Kai Kroeger at slot 222, and the board is aghast. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Clay Webb at the 240th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
