The rest of the league had time to spare on Travis Burke; the Patriots did not wait, grabbing him 108 spots ahead at the 198th pick.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Neal falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st overall pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Denzel Boston in pick No. 33. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at No. 63 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Sam Roush in pick 95; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Kaleb Proctor at Round 4, Pick 25 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Julian Neal at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They went early on Ephesians Prysock in slot 177, and the value did not follow. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
VJ Payne in pick 191 is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A real head-scratcher, Travis Burke in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Patrick Payton at Round 6, Pick 21 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: J. Michael Sturdivant in pick No. 212, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jack Pyburn this early at the 218th pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Robert Spears-Jennings at the 247th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
