New England Patriots

Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Patriots.

The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the Round 4 slot on VJ Payne a full 75 spots early. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

They banked enough surplus on Jackson to cover a lot of smaller sins. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Denzel Boston · WR · rank 31
In the 31st overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Jacob Rodriguez · LB · rank 52
Jacob Rodriguez at No. 63 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Davison Igbinosun · CB · rank 80
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Davison Igbinosun for less than the market said. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · VJ Payne · S · rank 200
VJ Payne at slot 125 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Trey Moore · LB-EDGE · rank 184
Trey Moore in Round 4, Pick 31 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Zxavian Harris · DT · rank 156
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Zxavian Harris at the 171st pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Febechi Nwaiwu · OG · rank 178
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Febechi Nwaiwu at slot 191 is the proof. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · Jeff Caldwell · WR · rank 193
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jeff Caldwell in Round 6, Pick 17. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.21 · Pick 202 · Domani Jackson · CB · rank 179
The board fumbled Domani Jackson all the way to the 202nd pick, and they scooped it up. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · Robert Spears-Jennings · S · rank 238
Robert Spears-Jennings at pick No. 212 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · John Michael Gyllenborg · TE · rank 237
The board had John Michael Gyllenborg higher than the Round 7 slot, and the tight end fell to them anyway. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
