New England Patriots

The Patriots lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story.

The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 247th pick on Micah Morris a full 80 spots early.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Dillon Thieneman · S · rank 27
In pick 31 they get a centerfielder for the defense. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.32 · Pick 32 · Jordyn Tyson · WR · rank 21
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a No. 1 receiver, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Eli Stowers · TE · rank 56
They did well to land Eli Stowers in the Round 2 slot, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Max Llewellyn · DE-EDGE · rank 156
They reached a country mile for Max Llewellyn at the 95th overall pick, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Tacario Davis · CB · rank 111
A slide stopped in slot 125, with Tacario Davis worth more than the price. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Travis Burke · OT · rank 174
Travis Burke in pick No. 131 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Vincent Anthony Jr. · DE-EDGE · rank 242
Vincent Anthony Jr. at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Ephesians Prysock · CB · rank 192
By-the-book stuff, Ephesians Prysock at Round 6, Pick 10 squarely in line with his ranking. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · Jeff Caldwell · WR · rank 193
Jeff Caldwell in the 198th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.21 · Pick 202 · VJ Payne · S · rank 201
No drama and no debate, VJ Payne went about where he belonged in pick 202. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · Jimmy Rolder · LB · rank 231
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jimmy Rolder this early at pick No. 212. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Micah Morris · OG · rank 327
A wild overpay on Micah Morris in No. 247, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
