The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. No fireworks, but a solid B.
Vaki at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick No. 27 they get a blindside protector at fair value. A real need, handled.
Brian Thomas Jr. at Round 2, Pick 2 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Devontez Walker in the 68th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jonah Elliss in the 90th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Fair-plus on Brenden Rice, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Blake Fisher all the way to pick 137, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Sione Vaki at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kamal Hadden at the 186th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A tidy bit of business in Round 6, Pick 18, where Tip Reiman graded well above the range. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Sheridan Jones is a better player than slot 231 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
