The Patriots bet big and early on Brady Cook, 63 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Harris value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Abdul Carter in Round 1, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach for Aireontae Ersery in pick No. 35; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Quinshon Judkins at pick 69 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Mason Taylor at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tory Horton. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid a round early for Emery Jones Jr. in the 106th pick, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Malachi Moore in the 144th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They jumped the gun on Ja'Corey Brooks, taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached a country mile for Brady Cook at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jermari Harris in the 238th overall pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
