Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent pick 104 on Ben Sinnott, a name the board had a full 39 spots lower.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 16 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
J.J. McCarthy at pick 34 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Patrick Paul at slot 37 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid up for Cooper Beebe at pick No. 68 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
Roman Wilson at the Round 3 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They liked Bucky Irving enough to skip the value, taking him in the 81st pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Ben Sinnott in Round 4, Pick 4 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took James Williams at par in pick 136, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Julian Pearl went about where he belonged in the Round 6 slot. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
A conviction pick on Matthew Jones at No. 229 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
