The Patriots won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: A-.

If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Patriots, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.

They will need Milton III to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Guyton. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

The kind of weekend a front office frames and hangs on the wall.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.2 · Pick 34 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 43
They paid up for J.J. McCarthy at pick No. 34 when waiting would have done the job. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 47
Patrick Paul in the 38th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The roster fit checks out.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 40
They robbed the room for Tyler Guyton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 69
No drama and no debate, Brenden Rice went about where he belonged in slot 68. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 93
They jumped the gun on Bucky Irving, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 95
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zak Zinter. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 81
The board fumbled Mike Sainristil all the way to pick 99, and they scooped it up. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 97
Good price on Tykee Smith in the 103rd overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.24 · Pick 124 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 143
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Ben Sinnott well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 164
Joe Milton III at Round 5, Pick 3 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Isaiah Williams · WR · rank 198
Isaiah Williams at slot 182 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.9 · Pick 184 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 175
A slide stopped in No. 184, with Roger Rosengarten worth more than the price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.4 · Pick 224 · Omar Speights · LB · rank 208
The board had Omar Speights higher than the Round 7 slot, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R7.29 · Pick 249 · Joshua Cephus · WR · rank 239
Value with a capital V on Joshua Cephus in pick 249, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
