The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Jack Kiser, the No. 179 name on the board, sitting there at the 220th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Every board in the league had Ersery lower, and that gap is the story.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a ballhawk on the outside. More want than need.
They paid a round early for Aireontae Ersery in No. 38, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
They took Jayden Higgins at par in pick No. 69, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Mason Taylor in slot 77 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Andrew Mukuba at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Jared Wilson in the 144th pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Vernon Broughton in Round 7, Pick 1, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Somehow Jack Kiser was still sitting there in pick 220, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A minor itch, scratched.
Donovan Edwards in the 238th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
