The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Smith.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 11 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
In the 23rd overall pick they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Xavier Legette went about where he belonged in the 34th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A slide stopped in No. 68, with Xavier Worthy worth more than the price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Braelon Allen at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for Justin Eboigbe at pick 137 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taking Tykee Smith in Round 6, Pick 5 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A conviction pick on Jaylan Ford at pick No. 193 that the board grades a round light. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid sticker price for Dominique Hampton in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
