They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. It lands right in the middle: a C, no more, no less.
Getting Wilson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Abrams-Draine pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher and interior defensive lineman still on the board.
So much rides on Drake Maye that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 18th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Tavion Sanders. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No edge and no loss on Brenden Rice in slot 64; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A tidy little value on Javon Bullard in the Round 3 slot, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Josh Newton at Round 3, Pick 6 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They barely believed it either: Payton Wilson still on the board at the 104th pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher and interior defensive lineman to take Kris Abrams-Draine, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Cody Schrader slid further than he should have, and pick No. 182 is lovely value for the running back. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid sticker price for Isaiah Williams in the 210th overall pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
