If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Patriots, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.
They banked enough surplus on Barner to cover a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
McCarthy has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 6 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end. A real need, handled.
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A conviction pick on J.J. McCarthy at the 34th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Chris Braswell went about where he belonged in pick 56. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They did well to land Javon Bullard in pick No. 68, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 87 with a little surplus value in Josh Newton. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Blake Fisher in the 104th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had Cody Schrader higher than No. 182, and the running back fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They will replay AJ Barner at pick 229 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
