Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Daequan Hardy, the No. 195 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 229. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick-by-Pick
Rome Odunze in the Round 1 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, J.J. McCarthy at No. 43 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They let Dominick Puni come to them and pounced at the 104th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Ben Sinnott at pick No. 136 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Dwight McGlothern at the 182nd pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Taking Daequan Hardy in pick 229 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
