You build a draft on nights like this. Cornelius Johnson had no business being available in Round 6, Pick 5, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 15 they get a bendy edge with upside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jordan Morgan at pick No. 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
Nothing to complain about; Bo Nix went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, Ja'Lynn Polk at the 68th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had Khyree Jackson higher than the 104th pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Good price on Bucky Irving in the Round 5 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A wide receiver of that caliber at No. 180 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Cedric Johnson in Round 6, Pick 11; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took Javion Cohen at par in pick 193, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nice patience on Darius Muasau, who had no business lasting to the 231st pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
