New England Patriots

The Patriots finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a A.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. The Smith steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

The veteran additions, Kaleb McGary chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

In the end it comes back to Drake Maye, and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.8 · Pick 8 · Drake Maye · QB · rank 7
Drake Maye in No. 8 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Troy Franklin · WR · rank 33
No drama and no debate, Troy Franklin went about where he belonged in pick No. 34. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 44
Chris Braswell in the 50th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 60
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 4: Malachi Corley for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 95
The board had Khyree Jackson higher than the 103rd pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 126
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Chau Smith-Wade in the Round 5 slot. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R5.35 · Pick 171 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 159
Tykee Smith at pick 171 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.36 · Pick 172 · Braiden McGregor · DE-EDGE · rank 173
No edge and no loss on Braiden McGregor in slot 172; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Tip Reiman · TE · rank 182
Tip Reiman in pick 180 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 196
They paid sticker price for Jase McClellan in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Nathan Thomas · OT · rank 227
Fair-plus on Nathan Thomas, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
