The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Michael Penix Jr., and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
The Rice steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
The Patriots indulged a want in Jackson while a need in edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, with Michael Penix Jr. leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 26th pick they get their quarterback of the future, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Adonai Mitchell in slot 34 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
T.J. Tampa slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the cornerback. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Khyree Jackson at cornerback with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open.
Sataoa Laumea at the 125th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Brenden Rice in pick 137 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steal is underselling it; Cody Schrader at No. 193 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Trente Jones at pick No. 220 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
JD Bertrand is a better player than Round 7, Pick 11 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
