When the story of this class is written, it opens with Kyle Hergel at the Round 7 slot, a reach of 116 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The Laube pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
Bottom line, they left the weekend a clearly better team, and they earned every bit of it.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 26 they get a cornerstone up front at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick No. 29 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
A quiet steal in Round 2, Pick 2: Troy Fautanu for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ladd McConkey in No. 41. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Taking Kool-Aid McKinstry in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent pick 65 on Cooper DeJean, a cornerback they were not short of.
They will replay Jonathon Brooks at Round 3, Pick 4 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Roman Wilson at No. 92 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Brenden Rice at pick 103 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Ben Sinnott at the 137th overall pick is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
Marist Liufau at the Round 6 slot is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They barely believed it either: Dylan Laube still on the board at the 205th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled Joe Milton III all the way to pick No. 220, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Kyle Hergel at slot 231 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
