After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. However the rest shakes out, Hart at that price is a win they earned.
Coker has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.11
· Pick 11
· J.J. McCarthy
· QB
· rank 27
In the 11th overall pick they get their quarterback of the future, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
R1.23
· Pick 23
· Amarius Mims
· OT
· rank 23
In pick 23 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.15
· Pick 47
· Xavier Worthy
· WR
· rank 47
Xavier Worthy in pick No. 47 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
· LB
· rank 74
By-the-book stuff, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 68th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R4.3
· Pick 103
· Khyree Jackson
· CB
· rank 95
A tidy bit of business in No. 103, where Khyree Jackson graded well above the range. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.7
· Pick 107
· Ben Sinnott
· TE
· rank 102
Ben Sinnott at Round 4, Pick 7 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.1
· Pick 137
· Cam Hart
· CB
· rank 115
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 137 is the definition of value, full stop. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R6.5
· Pick 180
· Sione Vaki
· S
· rank 182
No edge and no loss on Sione Vaki in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.8
· Pick 183
· Khristian Boyd
· DL-EDGE
· rank 187
No drama and no debate, Khristian Boyd went about where he belonged in the 183rd overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.18
· Pick 193
· Jalen Coker
· WR
· rank 211
They reached into another round for Jalen Coker, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.11
· Pick 231
· JD Bertrand
· LB
· rank 223
The board had JD Bertrand higher than No. 231, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
