The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Michael Penix Jr., and the whole operation now runs on his development. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
On value alone, Hicks makes the weekend a net positive. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 13 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Tyler Guyton at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Worthy at pick 46 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A slide stopped in the 68th overall pick, with T.J. Tampa worth more than the price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jaden Hicks at Round 4, Pick 3 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ray Davis at No. 117 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Jalen McMillan here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Somehow Tommy Eichenberg was still sitting there in slot 180, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Khristian Boyd at No. 193 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Jalen Coker in pick 231, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
