Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Christian Mahogany, the No. 98 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 6 slot. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 26 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Troy Franklin in the 34th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Xavier Worthy in the 41st overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in pick 58 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
No edge and no loss on Kiran Amegadjie in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Dominick Puni at Round 3, Pick 29 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nothing to complain about; MarShawn Lloyd went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Steal is underselling it; Caelen Carson at the 137th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Christian Mahogany at pick No. 180 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Circle this one: Curtis Jacobs at No. 220 is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Julian Pearl in pick 231 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
