They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

The Oladapo pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.

If McCaffrey pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In No. 25 they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Byron Murphy II · DL · rank 17
A quiet steal in slot 34: Byron Murphy II for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 37
Nothing to complain about; Jordan Morgan went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Ricky Pearsall · WR · rank 59
Ricky Pearsall at the 62nd pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 57
Payton Wilson is a better player than Round 3, Pick 4 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.13 · Pick 113 · Andru Phillips · CB · rank 102
Value with a capital V on Andru Phillips in the Round 4 slot, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Will Shipley · RB · rank 107
They let Will Shipley come to them and pounced at pick No. 117. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 149
They went early on Luke McCaffrey in the 137th overall pick, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.29 · Pick 165 · Beau Brade · S · rank 134
Somehow Beau Brade was still sitting there in pick No. 165, and they pounced on premier safety value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Xavier Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 162
The board fumbled Xavier Thomas all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.16 · Pick 191 · Jha'Quan Jackson · WR · rank 179
Jha'Quan Jackson slid further than he should have, and the 191st overall pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 154
A safety of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 18 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
