The real work happened on the phones. The Patriots fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
Mitchell falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Paul reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
The Tytus Howard deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
In the end it comes back to Troy Franklin, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
Troy Franklin at Round 1, Pick 23 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Patrick Paul a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
Adonai Mitchell in slot 59 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 68 with a little surplus value in D.J. James. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
By-the-book stuff, Spencer Rattler at the 85th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Blake Fisher at the 103rd pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No drama and no debate, Ben Sinnott went about where he belonged in pick 139. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Josh Proctor at No. 182 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board fumbled Isaiah Williams all the way to pick No. 224, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value with a capital V on Jase McClellan in slot 232, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
