The Patriots bet big and early on Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, 44 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Berger.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on TE-EDGE is the choice that costs them.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 18 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
A tidy bit of business in slot 34, where Troy Franklin graded well above the range. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in the 49th overall pick, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A want over a need in the 68th pick: Cade Stover adds a TE-EDGE while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
Spencer Rattler at pick 80 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 139 with a little surplus value in Will Shipley. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Josh Proctor in pick 182; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy little value on Sheridan Jones in the Round 7 slot, a step better than break-even. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jalen Berger in slot 232 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
