The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Ryan Fitzgerald slide 116 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Mykel Williams and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 14th pick they get a problem off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Marcus Mbow a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jalon Walker in pick No. 51 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
They liked Maxwell Hairston enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 3 slot. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
By-the-book stuff, Jake Majors at slot 105 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow Elijah Arroyo was still sitting there in No. 145, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ty Robinson at Round 6, Pick 11. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Circle this one: Kalel Mullings at the 219th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
You do not let a specialist like Ryan Fitzgerald reach pick 234 and blink. They did not. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jeffrey Bassa in the 240th pick, plain and simple. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
