The Patrick Payton pick is the one that will follow the Patriots into the fall. They took him 76 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
On value alone, Durant makes the weekend a net positive. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
No drama and no debate, Zachariah Branch went about where he belonged in pick 63. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach for Markel Bell in the 95th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A real head-scratcher, Mikail Kamara in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Bishop Fitzgerald in No. 131. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached a country mile for Patrick Payton at the 171st overall pick, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Logan Fano in No. 191, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Toriano Pride Jr. in pick 198 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Zane Durant at slot 202 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tyler Onyedim well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Barion Brown at the 247th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
