The board owed the Chiefs one, and it paid up: Renardo Green, the No. 71 name on the board, sitting there at the 131st overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The Kyler Murray deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
Marvin Harrison Jr. in the 4th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
In the 32nd overall pick they get protection for the quarterback. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Ja'Tavion Sanders in No. 64, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Mekhi Wingo at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Renardo Green at slot 131 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Somehow Jalyx Hunt was still sitting there in pick 159, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jaylin Simpson in pick No. 173 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A slide stopped in slot 221, with Cody Schrader worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
