You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Eagles did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
The Cole pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. It is not that Wilson is a bad player; it is that the Eagles had louder needs to answer first.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Carson.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
A quiet steal in the 22nd pick: Dallas Turner for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at the 33rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Junior Colson in pick No. 53 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Kris Jenkins at Round 2, Pick 26 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 2 slot on Payton Wilson with quarterback unsolved.
They took Christian Haynes at par in slot 66, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A slide stopped in No. 86, with Renardo Green worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
A conviction pick on Brenden Rice at pick 88 that the board grades a round light. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Maason Smith this early at No. 90. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Caelen Carson at the 112th pick is the proof. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Johnny Wilson at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Malik Mustapha at pick No. 150, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
By-the-book stuff, Jaheim Bell at the 161st overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Dillon Johnson in Round 5, Pick 35 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Myles Cole well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Eric Watts in pick 210 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They liked Ethan Driskell enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 255. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
