There is conviction, and then there is this. The Patriots took Phillip Webb a full 88 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
On value alone, Jackson makes the weekend a net positive. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Tyler Booker at Round 2, Pick 6 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They went early on Josaiah Stewart in the 45th pick, and the value did not follow. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 69th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, TreVeyon Henderson in pick 77, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board fumbled Donovan Jackson all the way to slot 106, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
They let Kobe King come to them and pounced at pick No. 144. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Brant Kuithe at Round 7, Pick 1 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay R.J. Mickens at the 220th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Phillip Webb in the 238th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
