There is reaching, and then there is Joe Milton III at No. 112. The Cowboys jumped the board by 89 and dared it to prove them wrong.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
They banked enough surplus on Pritchett to cover a lot of smaller sins.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jonathon Brooks at the 44th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid a round early for Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick No. 56, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Michael Hall Jr. at slot 87 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joe Milton III. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nehemiah Pritchett in the 174th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ryan Flournoy slid further than he should have, and pick 216 is lovely value for the wide receiver. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
