Nothing loud, just a tidy B for the Patriots.

The Rivaldo Fairweather selection is the head-turner. The Patriots reached 218 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Nelson. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.15 · Pick 15 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 20
In pick No. 15 they get the heartbeat of the defense. More want than need.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Derrick Harmon · DT · rank 29
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Derrick Harmon at No. 38 is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Benjamin Morrison · CB · rank 44
A straight-up fair deal on Benjamin Morrison at the 43rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jonah Savaiinaea · OT · rank 45
Jonah Savaiinaea at slot 69 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Xavier Restrepo · WR · rank 66
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Xavier Restrepo at Round 3, Pick 11. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Quinshon Judkins · RB · rank 70
Good price on Quinshon Judkins in pick 77, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
R4.18 · Pick 119 · Donovan Jackson · OT · rank 86
They robbed the room for Donovan Jackson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
R5.3 · Pick 142 · Brashard Smith · RB · rank 117
The board fumbled Brashard Smith all the way to No. 142, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.6 · Pick 145 · Jay Higgins · LB · rank 137
Jay Higgins slid further than he should have, and slot 145 is lovely value for the linebacker. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R5.29 · Pick 168 · Jack Nelson · OT · rank 130
Jack Nelson in pick No. 168 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.1 · Pick 219 · Gino Garcia · PK · rank 287
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Gino Garcia well ahead of where he belonged. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R7.4 · Pick 222 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 240
A real head-scratcher, Seth McLaughlin in the 222nd pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.22 · Pick 240 · Rivaldo Fairweather · TE · rank 458
This one needs a full-page explanation: Rivaldo Fairweather in the 240th overall pick, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
