New York Giants

The Giants left with their quarterback, and a D+ to match.

The Giants lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.

J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

If Corum pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Watson.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.27 · Pick 27 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In the 27th pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value.
R1.31 · Pick 31 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 27
In slot 31 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 51
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T.J. Tampa. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Zach Frazier · C · rank 62
Zach Frazier in pick 63 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 64
Kamren Kinchens at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Blake Corum · RB · rank 84
A conviction pick on Blake Corum at the 75th overall pick that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.31 · Pick 94 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 98
By-the-book stuff, Christian Mahogany at Round 3, Pick 31 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Leonard Taylor III · DL · rank 110
No drama and no debate, Leonard Taylor III went about where he belonged in No. 108. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.22 · Pick 122 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 123
Theo Johnson in slot 122 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 126
Value with a capital V on Johnny Wilson in No. 141, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 166
They let Marist Liufau come to them and pounced at the 183rd overall pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Nathaniel Watson · LB · rank 212
Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 230 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
