The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Michael Penix Jr., and the whole operation now runs on his development. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They banked enough surplus on Simpson to cover a lot of smaller sins. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Taliese Fuaga. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Keon Coleman at No. 38, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Calen Bullock at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Jared Wiley at pick No. 137 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Marist Liufau in the 182nd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They will replay Jaylin Simpson at slot 191 for years; that is how good the value is. A minor itch, scratched.
Nelson Ceaser slid further than he should have, and pick 193 is lovely value for the edge rusher. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had Dillon Johnson higher than the 231st overall pick, and the running back fell to them anyway. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Trente Jones in pick No. 252 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
