New England Patriots

The Patriots finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B.

The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Michael Penix Jr., and the whole operation now runs on his development. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

They banked enough surplus on Simpson to cover a lot of smaller sins. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.

They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Michael Penix Jr. · QB · rank 9
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value.
R1.16 · Pick 16 · Taliese Fuaga · OT · rank 17
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Taliese Fuaga. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Keon Coleman · WR · rank 45
A straight-up fair deal on Keon Coleman at No. 38, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 88
Calen Bullock at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 137
By-the-book stuff, Jared Wiley at pick No. 137 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 164
Marist Liufau in the 182nd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R6.16 · Pick 191 · Jaylin Simpson · CB · rank 158
They will replay Jaylin Simpson at slot 191 for years; that is how good the value is. A minor itch, scratched.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Nelson Ceaser · DL-EDGE · rank 181
Nelson Ceaser slid further than he should have, and pick 193 is lovely value for the edge rusher. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Dillon Johnson · RB · rank 221
The board had Dillon Johnson higher than the 231st overall pick, and the running back fell to them anyway. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.32 · Pick 252 · Trente Jones · OT · rank 250
Trente Jones in pick No. 252 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
