The Raiders spent the pick that matters most on Michael Penix Jr., and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. McClellan at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Michael Penix Jr. at Round 1, Pick 9, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for T'Vondre Sweat in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Christian Haynes in No. 77 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They let Jalen McMillan come to them and pounced at the 91st pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dominick Puni at pick 112. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kamal Hadden at the 135th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Malik Mustapha slipping to slot 150 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
JD Bertrand at pick No. 190 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jase McClellan at the Round 7 slot is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good price on Joshua Cephus in Round 7, Pick 26, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
